Summer Language Immersion Program

Ø The Student
Any person whose native language is not Chinese and who is not living in China.
Ø Program Description
The program is 80 hours of Chinese language immersion, and is equivalent to a one-year course in the United States. Exclusive concentration in the Chinese language includes Basic and Intermediate Chinese, Conversation, Listening Comprehension, Composition, and use of the Chinese Dictionary.
Ø Classification
Students will be divided into four classes of two categories based upon results of the test before enrollment
Ø Teaching Material
Teaching material for both basic and intermediate Chinese is edited and published by Beijing University and Beijing Language Culture University
Ø Class Schedule
Class sessions are held Monday through Friday with four periods daily. Each class is 50 minutes in length.
Ø Course Content
The courses are taught with specific concentration predicted on the proficiency levels of the students, and are divided into two categories, Basic and Intermediate.
a. Basic Chinese:
Pin Yin System, character, phraseology, listening and conversation, and use of the dictionary and Chinese history.
b. Intermediate Chinese:
Intensive reading, writing, conversation, Chinese culture, history and poetry.
Ø Course Curriculum
Students are given a daily 90 minute-homework assignment in addition to a daily quiz. Weekly tests are administered to ascertain the student¡¦s progress, comprehension, and proficiency. At the end of the program, each student is required to perform in mini-drama or presentation to demonstrate his or her language skills.
Ø Instructors¡¦ credentials
Instructors are from the Beijing International Language Institute and the teaching organizations authorized by the Chinese National Education Committee.
Ø Cultural Excursions
Students are taken on an excursion to see firsthand what they have learned in the classroom. Excursions include tours of the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Lama Temple, Hong Qiao Market, Summer Palace, Beihai Park, Fragrant Hill, Jing Shan, Children¡¦s Palace, Cultural Street, Botanical Garden, Zoo, families¡¦ homes, acrobatic show and Beijing Opera, Animal preserve, party with students on the cruise boat, Crocodile Training Center, apple orchard, ¡§ Bird Forest¡¨, Terra Cotta Warrior, City Wall, ceremony of entering Xian city, Ban Po Museum, Yu Yuan Garden, Nanjing Road. Visit will also be made to Xian, Dalian and Shanghai.
Ø Class Size and Academic Calendar
The classes are intentionally limited to a small size in order to provide personalized attention to the individual needs of the students, and to facilitate comprehensive learning. The number of students for each class is between 6 and 12. The academic calendar for the program will be Summer, 2001 with the U.S. departure date on June 30, 2001. With the program running on a continuous basis, for groups of twelve (12) or more students, the scheduling will be contingent on their collective needs.
Ø Instructional Language
Instructors provide instruction in both English and Chinese.
Ø Student Criteria
Students must be between 12-22 years of age. For Basic Chinese, there are no language proficiency requirements. For Intermediate Chinese, students are required to have a fluency in basic Chinese in speaking, reading and writing. A test will be administered at the commencement of the program to determine the level of fluency of the students. Students under the age of 12 must have parental permission.
Ø Student Housing and meals
There will be two students per room Each room will have bathroom and air conditioning. During cultural excursions, students will stay at four-star hotels. Students will regularly dine at cafeterias on campus. For the purposes of cultural introduction, students are treated to a Beijing Duck Dinner (7 courses) and an authentic dumpling dinner.

The cost of the program will vary depending upon the city from which the student departs. The costs are as follows:

East Coast, Mid-west, Southern part of U.S. $ 2998
The program includes tuition and fees, books, housing and meals, insurance, transpacific and domestic air fare, cultural excursions, group visa processing fee, and departure tax (U.S. and China). Cultural excursions include transportation, admissions, meals, and lodging. All cultural excursions are escorted by bilingual, professional guides.
Any expenses extraneous to those stated are excluded.
Classes are taken without transferable credit in the United States.
