Wuhan is the capital city of Hubei. The city lies where the Yangtze River joins the Hanshui River. Because of its prime location, Wuhan has been an important strategic city in China for centuries.

The Yellow Crane Tower sits perched on the top of Snake Hill. The Tower was erected in 223AD during the Three Kingdoms Period. Famous poets, such as Cui Ying, Li Bai and Lu You, were inspired by the its imposing presence. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the tower was destroyed and rebuilt seven times. The last destruction was in 1884 during the Qing Dynasty. Reconstruction occurred in 1981. The tower with its many tiers and crimson tiled slanted roof can be seen throughout the city.

The Guiyuan Temple in the Hanyang District was constructed at the end of the Ming Dynasty and the start of the Qing Dynasty. It is one of the four largest Buddhist Temples in Wuhan. The Temple is comprised of three major structures, Scripture Tower, Daxiong Hall and Arhat Hall. The temple is a repository for many valuable Buddhist portraits and sculptures. The masterful craftsmanship is exemplified in the 500 Arhat statues. The figures are sculpted in various positions. The facial expressions show joy, anger, and sadness.
