Dali is one of the most famous historical and cultural cities in China. Dali was once the capital of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms in ancient times. Dali offers magnificent landscapes, some of which are unsurpassed in China.

Dali is home to China's ethnic Bai people. The visitor can experience firsthand the unique culture, customs, art, architecture, and life style of the Bai people.

Old Town of Dali was built during the Ming Dynasty. The original north and south gate towers of the city walls remain standing to this very day. Within the city, the visitor is treated to the traditional houses of the Bai people with their tranquil way of life. "Foreigner's Street" offers visitors time to relax, dine and engage in conversation in an ancient outdoor setting.

Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Monastery are located 1 kilometer from Dali. They were constructed between 823AD and 895AD. They consist of Qinxun Pagoda, which is the larger of the other two pagodas. Qianxun Tower is comprised of 16 tiers and stands 69.13 meters. There are upturned eaves at each layer. In the central portion of each façade is a shrine, which houses a white marble Buddhist statue. The two smaller pagodas have 10 tiers and stand 43 meters. Each story of the two pagodas houses an elaborately carved shrine with a Buddhist statue and lotus flowers. The Three Pagodas are excellent examples of Bai architecture.

Butterfly Spring is situated 25 kilometers to the north of Old Town. Crystal clear spring waters spring forth amidst lush green foliage. On the 15th and 4th month of the Chinese calendar, the Bai people hold their traditional Butterfly Fair. Days before and following the festival, thousands of butterflies flock to the Spring, thus the name.
